Howard Smith
Program Director / Head Coach

Long before Hockey in the Hood, Howard Smith has been involved with hockey in the Pittsburgh area. Smith started his hockey career in 1975 when he learned to skate and play with the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League. This lead to Smith playing high school hockey with South High School 's Junior Varsity team in 1978/79. Upon graduation from high school in 1979, Smith embarked on an enlistment in the United States navy which lasted 23 years. All during that time, Smith continued to play and coach hockey. In 1994, Smith began his coaching career with the San Diego , California Roller Hockey Conference guiding a division A team to a championship in 1997. During the 2000-01 season Smith returned home to Pittsburgh and served as an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League. Also during this time Hockey in the Hood was formed. Smith's experience in hockey has made the Hockey in the Hood program one to the top National Hockey League Diversity programs in the United States and Canada .

Coach Smith is certified Level 4 with USA Hockey and Hockey Canada .

Dr. Higginbotham is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and attending physician in the Division of Child Advocacy at the Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh. Dr. Higginbotham is a specialist in the field of child maltreatment (physical abuse, sexual abuse and neglect). Her interest are in family and youth violence prevention, children in foster care, and health disparities in minority populations. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Higginbotham grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and completed her education and medical training at the University of Cincinnati, Brown University and the Georgetown University Hospital. Prior to coming to Pittsburgh, she practices pediatrics in New York City for six years at community health centers in Harlem, and the South Bronx. Including two years of service with the National Health Service Corps of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Coach Monique (Mo) picked up the sport of ice hockey as an adult. She has been playing recreational ice hockey with the Ice Maidens (Robert Morris University / Pittsburgh) for three years. She is a Level 1 certified coach with USA Hockey. She is proud to represent the National Hockey League Diversity Task Force as an African American female in the sport of hockey and is honored to be a coach for the Hockey in the Hood Badgers. Her hobbies include reading, drawing, painting, playing piano and theater arts.
